Two small ships lie side by side in the back of Homebush Bay, the 258 ton steam tug SS Heroic, and the HMAS Karangi. There was just enough space between the ships to squeeze through in my kayak. The water in this part of the bay is extremely shallow - at low tide even the diminutive kayak was touching the muddy bottom in places.
The Heroic was built in Britain in 1909, so she would have been around 109 years old when I saw her. Apparently she was abandoned in Homebush Bay some time during the 1970's. She looked like she was abandoned more or less intact, but parts of her superstructure had rusted away. Due to her steep list to port, and heavily corroded decks, I didn't think it was worth the risk of trying to board her. Besides, there wasn't much that I couldn't see from my kayak, or the nearby deck of HMAS Karangi.
The photographs below were taken on three different days from December 2017 to June 2018, showing her in a variety of lighting conditions and tide heights.
